Last Friday, her Majesty's Revenue and Customs published changes to the landfill tax rate for trommel fines, grit and screenings.

From immediate effect, these materials no longer qualify for the reduced £2.50 per tonne landfill tax rate but are now subject to the full £64 per tonne tax. This sudden and instant change to the tax rate has caused turmoil in the waste industry this week and the consequences are still being played out.

As an immediate result, landfill operators, recycling centres and skip companies are reviewing their rates. Skip prices for general waste and inert waste will be affected.
