Last week, the results of the Great British Asbestos Survey 2011 were made available by the Asbestos Inspection Bodies.

The survey, carried out late last year, looked at 'knowledge and awareness of those not working in the asbestos industry but those that are impacted by asbestos and have a duty to manage buildings that contain asbestos or employees that may encounter asbestos as part of their work'.

620 people responded to the survey which found that only 68% of those respondents were aware of the duty to manage asbestos and only 63% of duty holders have asbestos management plans in place for their buildings.

All duty holders said they provide asbestos information to visiting contractors but only 83% of contractors said they require asbestos information from clients and only 60% of them receive it when visiting commercial properties.

35% of contractors visiting sites say they have disturbed asbestos and 26% said they did not know whether they had disturbed asbestos.
