Virgin Atlantic Airways has awarded a five year deal to Windsor Waste Management's sister company, national waste broker Waste Cost Reduction Services (WCRS), for a total waste management service across seven sites including Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

The contract, worth over £600,000 over the five year period, covers all waste generated on a day to day basis on the ground as well as through property and aircraft refurbishments and clearances.  WCRS will be providing recycling and recovery solutions for all wastes including recycling, general waste and hazardous waste.

As one of the world’s leading airlines, Virgin Atlantic generates over 740 tonnes of waste each year.  The company has a clear policy on sustainability and a commitment to reducing its environmental impact which has seen waste tonnages reduced by 29% since 2008 and a recycling and reuse rate of 68% achieved.  The company has partnered with WCRS in order to continue to improve its environmental performance by reviewing all options to further prevent, reuse, recycle and recover materials.

Luke Bolechala, Senior Buyer, Virgin Atlantic says: “We chose WCRS as we liked their consultative and professional approach and we felt we could work with them from day one.  We like the brokerage model, it gives us the flexibility we need to manage all our varied waste streams under one point of contact.”

Alex Mirkovic, Commercial Director, WCRS says: “We are delighted to have won this contract and to be working with a worldwide company who places such importance on sustainability.  We look forward to maintaining a long and fruitful partnership with Virgin Atlantic.”
