The Environment Agency (EA) has prosecuted two waste operators and a driver in Essex for running an illegal waste site and fly tipping asbestos.

The company illegally stored blue, brown and white asbestos at the site in Benfleet and fly tipped the hazardous waste across the Home Counties.  Customers were lead to believe their asbestos waste was being disposed of in line with legislation by forged consignment notes and invoices from a registered landfill site.

Jeff Letch, General Manager, Windsor Waste Management says: “The public and our countryside were put at risk by individuals with no regard for the law, public health or the environment.  Customers were deceived and their reputation damaged for failing to verify the credentials of their asbestos disposal contractors.  This demonstrates how important it is for companies and individuals to ensure they are using specialist and fully licensed asbestos disposal companies, cutting corners and saving costs doesn’t pay in the long term.”

The individuals concerned received suspended prison sentences and community service.
